Astute’s Renewables Team is partnering with a growing business who develop and operate a portfolio of biogas plants with a commitment to professional development and sustainability, to recruit a Process Safety Engineer for its Girvan, South Ayrshire site.

Responsibilities and duties 
 
Reporting to the Head of Compliance you will:

•    Ensure all sites remain compliant with Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR).
•    Coordinate with insurance partners to inspect and test new equipment under the Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) for PSSR compliance.
•    Organise and lead process safety assessments for new projects and modifications to existing plants, including LOPA, SIL determination, DSEAR assessments, and HAZOP studies.
•    Provide guidance and support to operations and project teams, promoting a proactive and balanced approach to process safety compliance while driving continuous improvements in productivity and site performance.
•    Arrange DOMINO meetings with Health & Safety representatives from neighbouring plants (upper-tier COMAH sites) to assess operational impacts and identify opportunities for improvement.
•    Conduct formal design reviews and in-depth analyses of existing systems to identify gaps and areas for enhancement.
•    Assist sites during visits from external regulators (HSE and SEPA), acting as a liaison on process safety matters.
•    Participate in the CER preliminary screening working group, ensuring the quality of submissions to the Leadership Team.
•    Continue to develop and implement an electronic lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) system across the company, auditing training and compliance for all personnel.
•    Investigate any process safety-related incidents or accidents that occur.
•    Advise site leaders on enhancing safety standards and perform regular audits to ensure plants operate within design parameters during normal operations and start-up/shutdown procedures.
•    Coordinate and audit emergency exercises across sites, identifying areas for improvement in emergency response.
•    Audit industrial sites for Process Safety Management best practices and compliance with regulations such as COMAH, LOLER, PUWER, and DSEAR.
•    Contribute to the review and continuous improvement of the Company Process Safety Management System (PSMS), identifying and closing gaps while supporting system integration across sites.
•    Assist in the development and implementation of strategic safety initiatives.
 
 
Professional qualifications 
 
We are looking for someone with the following: 
 
•    Degree qualified in Chemical, Mechanical or a Process Engineering field of study.
•    Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or other relevant process safety certified.
•    Demonstrable experience in Process Safety Engineering – preferably within Biogas, Waste Water, Chemical Engineering or other process engineering.
•    Excellent understanding of Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) regulations and Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).
•    Experience in investigating accidents or near misses.
•    Experience implementing Process Safety Management Systems.
•    Proficient in the use of MS Office programs.
•    A Full UK Driving Licence is essential due to the remote location (s) of the plants.

•    Willing to travel to different sites (we offer paid mileage and car allowance).
