Astutes Power Team are working with a leading independent power producer who own and operate several assets across the UK. They operate a Gas Fired Power Station in Runcorn, capable of producing over 800MW through gas and steam turbine technology.

We are looking for a Health, Safety, Security and Environmental professional to join the power station. As the HSSE officer you’ll be the subject matter expert on site for all issues. You’ll be responsible for creating a safer working environment, leading audits and investigations, delivering training and managing contractors.

Responsibilities and duties of the HSSE Officer role:
Reporting directly to the Plant Manager as a HSSE Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring adherence to HSSE management systems, policies, and site-specific rules
  • Leading and supporting emergency preparedness activities, including drills and exercises
  • Contributing to internal communications, performance metrics (KPIs), and implementation of site-level HSSE strategy
  • Promoting strong HSSE culture through coaching, engagement, and meaningful safety conversations
  • Assisting with incident investigations, learning reviews, and tracking corrective actions
  • Monitoring HSSE performance, identifying trends, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives
  • Supporting routine reporting, emergency exercises, audits, and interactions with regulatory bodies
  • Assisting in outage planning, training coordination, and ensuring site-wide regulatory compliance
  • Working closely with the Regional HSSE Manager on cross-site and strategic safety initiatives

Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Ideally qualified with a minimum NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety Management or equivalent
  • Degree in a relevant Safety field would be advantageous

Personal skills
The HSSE Officer role would suit someone who has:

  • Familiar with the Power Generation process or similar industry such as Incineration (Waste to Energy), Petrochemical, COMAH, Refinery, Papermills etc
  • Acted as lead auditor for accidents and investigations
  • Familiar with Rooy Cause Analysis and Continuous Improvement tools
