UK Nuclear Jobs: What SGE’s 14 New SMRs Mean For The Workforce

SGE wants to build 14 small modular reactors across three UK sites.

A 4.2GW fleet, GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 technology, enough power for close to eight million homes. Impressive on paper. But if you’re hiring for UK nuclear jobs, or building a career in the sector, the interesting part isn’t the reactor count.

It’s what a fleet this size does to a UK nuclear workforce that’s already running hot.

The announcement: SGE’s 14 SMR fleet

SGE has filed its application under the UK’s Advanced Nuclear Framework. Six units at the first site. Four each at two more.

SGE is aiming to enter the Advanced Nuclear Pipeline this November and have site selection and government support scheme talks wrapped by mid-2027.

First power is pencilled in for 2034.

The delivery partner list reads like a who’s who of major infrastructure: GE Vernova Hitachi, Samsung, Laing O’Rourke, Aecon.

All of them will be hiring for nuclear construction jobs UK-wide, drawing on the same tight pool of nuclear-capable engineers already stretched across Wylfa, Sizewell C and Hinkley Point C.

Part of a wider SMR build-out

SGE isn’t the only one moving.

Rolls-Royce SMR just confirmed its Pioneer Works manufacturing centre in Derby, roughly 40 new skilled roles in precision assembly and testing.

Layer that on top of Rolls-Royce’s Wylfa commitments and its fresh export wins in Sweden and the Czech Republic, and you start to see the shape of the problem: multiple fleet-scale programmes, all competing for SMR jobs UK talent from the same supply chain.

What this means for nuclear engineering recruitment

Somebody has to build these things.

Reactor engineers, commissioning managers, construction supervisors, licensing and safety case specialists, precision assembly technicians.

Hinkley Point C is already at around 12,000 workers on site, climbing to 15,000, with another 8,000 across its supply chain.

That’s before SGE’s fleet or Rolls-Royce’s expansion add their own demand on top, and it’s why nuclear engineering recruitment is one of the tightest corners of the UK energy market right now.

We haven’t seen a jobs figure specific to SGE’s programme yet. Until SGE or GBE-N publish one, treat any total headcount claim for this particular fleet with a healthy dose of scepticism.

The UK’s nuclear skills shortage

Here’s the part that doesn’t make the headlines: nuclear output has actually been falling while build ambitions scale up, and retirements are outpacing new entrants.

The UK’s nuclear skills shortage isn’t new, but announcements like SGE’s make it more urgent. Luckily, in this sector, professionals from construction, oil and gas and defence can bring transferable skills into nuclear roles.

The same squeeze shows up earlier in the pipeline too.

Entry-level apprenticeship routes into energy have narrowed at exactly the moment demand has grown. SGE’s announcement doesn’t cause that squeeze.

It’s the latest thing to run headfirst into it.

If you’re hiring, the lesson from Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C is worth repeating: workforce planning needs to run alongside project planning, not two years behind it.

Start once construction is underway and you’re bidding for whoever’s left of the UK nuclear workforce.
