The UK nuclear supply chain just went international. The workforce has not.

When Rolls-Royce SMR was selected to build three reactors on Sweden’s west coast earlier this month, most of the coverage focused on the deal itself.

A multibillion-pound export win. Government-backed. A third consecutive European contract. All accurate.

But the more consequential story sits beneath the headline.

The same engineers, the same specialist skills, and the same UK supply chain needed to deliver Wylfa, Sizewell C, and Hinkley Point C are now being asked to service contracts in Sweden and the Czech Republic too.

That compression is the real story, and it matters to every organisation currently hiring in nuclear.

UK nuclear build: three domestic programmes and a growing export pipeline.

The domestic picture alone would represent the most ambitious nuclear construction programme the UK has seen in a generation.

Wylfa in North Wales is confirmed as the site for the UK’s first small modular reactors, with up to three Rolls-Royce units initially and potential for eight over time. Construction is expected to begin this year, with first power targeted for the mid-2030s.

Sizewell C, backed by £14.2bn of government investment, will add 3.2GW of capacity and is forecast to support around 70,000 jobs at peak construction.

Hinkley Point C continues under construction in Somerset, with the Unit 2 Reactor Pressure Vessel installation recently approved by the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

Set that alongside the Sweden and Czech Republic contracts, and Rolls-Royce SMR is now the only organisation with multiple contractual commitments to deliver SMR units in Europe.

A shared supply chain across the UK, Sweden, and Czech deployments was a central part of the pitch to Stockholm. That shared supply chain is largely UK-based expertise.

The people building at Värö will come from much the same pool as the people building at Wylfa.

The workforce numbers don’t match the ambition yet

The UK nuclear workforce stands at around 96,000, against a target of 120,000 by 2030.

The National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills calls for 40,000 new nuclear jobs to be created within that same window. Those figures are demanding enough in isolation.

What makes them harder is the shape of the existing workforce. Most experienced nuclear professionals in the UK are oriented toward operations and maintenance. New build programmes, and first-of-kind SMR deployment in particular, require commissioning engineers, construction managers, project controls specialists, and reactor engineers.

That is a different profile. Retirements are currently outpacing new entrants in the nuclear sector at a ratio of roughly 1.7 to 1.

The pipeline isn’t moving fast enough to replace what is leaving, let alone to absorb the additional demand that export contracts create.

What this means for employers hiring now

The commercial case for the SMR programme is strengthening. Fleet economics improve with each additional contract. International confidence in the technology is building. The global SMR market is projected to reach nearly £500bn by 2050, and British nuclear is well-placed within it.

But for organisations building nuclear teams, the practical reality is tighter than the strategic narrative suggests.

Competition for experienced nuclear professionals now spans every deployment across Europe drawing from the same supply chain. Hiring managers are not competing against one or two comparable organisations. They are competing against a pan-European build programme that is gathering pace.

The organisations that navigate this well tend to do a few things consistently. They start workforce planning earlier than feels necessary. They treat candidate pipelines as long-term infrastructure, not a reactive response to open vacancies.

And they look carefully at skills transferability from adjacent sectors, conventional power, defence, and oil and gas among them.
