The Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) has welcomed the announcement of the EU Reset Deal, highlighting its potential to support skills growth and boost employment in key sectors across the UK.
The landmark agreement, revealed on 19 May 2025, includes crucial elements aimed at enhancing the mobility of young talent, mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and simplified travel for UK citizens to the EU.
APSCo has described the deal as essential for helping the UK compete effectively for global talent and addressing persistent skills shortages.
Tania Bowers, Global Public Policy Director at APSCo, commented:
“The UK has needed a stronger trade deal with the EU since it left the Bloc, and while the finer details of any mutual youth mobility scheme may not be announced today, the current discussions suggest that the Deal will have a positive impact on the movement of young people to work and study, which should help the country compete on a more level playing field for talent once again.”
Bowers also highlighted the significance of including services within the scope of the agreement, stating that it was encouraging to see elements like the mutual recognition of professional qualifications gaining attention. She emphasised the importance of collaborative implementation:
“What will, however, be absolutely crucial in the months ahead are the finer details of the agreement and how any changes will be implemented. UK employers don’t need another period of uncertainty or renegotiation, so now really is the time for a deal to be right. The only way that can happen will be for the Government to work in close collaboration with those that will be impacted by any changes on a day-to-day basis.”
Matt Dickens, Head of Professional Services at Astute, added:
“This new deal is a positive step forward, especially in tackling talent shortages.
“The prospect of improved mobility for young professionals and clearer recognition of qualifications can significantly enhance our clients’ access to skilled individuals. It’s now vital that the government works closely with recruiters and employers to ensure practical implementation delivers real benefits.”
APSCo highlighted recent supportive developments, including immigration reforms, the Labour Market Evidence Group (LMEG), and initiatives designed to attract leading scientists to the UK, noting these steps collectively enhance the country’s talent acquisition capabilities.
Looking ahead, APSCo stresses the need for close collaboration between the government, employers, and recruitment professionals to ensure the EU Reset Deal delivers sustainable economic and business growth through a targeted and practical talent strategy.
