Our people: Nuclear Talent Specialist, Laura Milsom

Laura Milsom is a Nuclear Talent Specialist for our Nuclear recruitment team at Astute.

For the Our People series, she spoke with Sam Bradshaw about her recent recruitment successes.

How did you get into nuclear recruitment?

I was looking for a part-time role to fit alongside family life and being a Mum.

Astute offered me a role which I thought was interesting and also offered the opportunity to earn more with commissions.

Astute allowed me to choose the days and hours I was able to work, which showed that they value flexible working.

What roles have you filled recently and at what types of companies?

Most recently, I filled a Senior Nuclear Engineer role for a global nuclear services company.

I also placed a candidate with an expanding AD (Anaerobic Digestion) company, which offered opportunities for growth and progression for its Technicians.

What is your favourite thing about working as a Nuclear Talent Specialist at Astute?

The people!

While Astute offers me flexible working and an opportunity to earn a full-time salary in a part-time role, the people here are what makes it a great place to work.

My team are a pleasure to see everyday, and my manager is very supportive.

What have you enjoyed most about your recent successes as a Nuclear Talent Specialist?

I really appreciate how our team pulls together to meet our goals, but what stands out for me is seeing candidates start new chapters in their careers.

It’s a good feeling to help them get there.

It’s not just about filling positions. It’s about finding the right fit that propels someone forward professionally.

That impact is what I find most satisfying.

What is the most exciting thing about your market?

Changes and new technologies are bubbling away all the time, which is exciting to try stay on top of.

Another exciting element is that the government is supporting the nuclear sector’s plans to grow and generate more sustainable energy.

What advice would you give someone who’s looking to join Astute?

Recruitment definitely presents a challenging learning curve – it’s not the easiest path, but it’s worthwhile.

Your effort is directly proportional to the rewards you reap, not just in terms of success, but also in the fulfilment you feel from the job.
